Every winter, the Big Railroad Hobby Show presented by the Amherst Railway Society at the Big E in West Springfield, MA, is the Mohegan Pequot Model Railroad Clubs largest display of the year. This year was no exception. Four scales participated, including the HO, N, On30, and G scales, during the weekend of January 27 and 28. Our HO scale layout has undergone massive renovations in the past year, with a number of modules being prepared for their debut at this years show.
“I am very impressed and proud of the work by our members over the last two years and am excited to reap the benefits of the new module work sessions at this years show,” said Dan DeLany, President of the Mohegan Pequot Model Railroad Club. He continued, “This years display will showcase our new lightweight module design and construction and show our renewed focus on scenery and aesthetics.”
In all, 8 new module sets consisting of 30 module sections made their debut at the show after a busy summer of module construction. These included KAJAC Paper, Mountain Lumber, Rockville Bridge, Rockville Corner, Centennial Modules, Pennsy Yard, Zigzag and Helix Railway, and Marysville, PA. In addition, 8 modules which made a debut at the show last year were substantially complete compared to their progress at last year's show. This rejuvenation of the HO layout has dropped the average module age to just 3.3 years. The layout was in a U-configuration and featured 58 module sections in total, filling in a 42’ x 72’ area. A club information table was also be set up in front of the HO layout which included pictures, information sheets, and a computer for train show attendees to surf our club website, www.mprr.org.
In addition to the HO scale layout, the club also set up a 36’x54’ G scale layout, an 8’ x 24’ On30 layout, and an 18’ x 24’ N scale layout. All of these layouts were located in our usual spot in the Young Building.
